About Bowie State University

Bowie State University, more commonly referred to as simply Bowie State, is a public university located in Bowie, which is a city in Prince George's County, in the US state of Maryland, with a population estimated at a number of more than 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the largest municipality in Prince George's County, as well as the fifth most populous city and third largest city by area in the state of Maryland.


Bowie State was established in January, 1865, first starting as Baltimore Normal School, in Baltimore, being founded by the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of Colored People. In 1908, the school was renamed to Normal School No. 3, and in 1914, it was moved to Prince George's County, becoming Maryland Normal and Industrial School at Bowie. The institution's current name was adopted around 1970, the year when it was authorized to grant its first graduate degree, a Master of Education.


Athletics

Bowie State's athletic teams are known as the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, including in bowling, basketball, football, cross country, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are black and gold.
